The ISSCR Announces Melbourne as Site of 2018 Annual Meeting

  • 12 November, 2015

The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) is pleased to announce Melbourne as the location for its 2018 annual meeting. This marks the society’s first visit to Australia since 2007, when constituents gathered in Cairns.

The meeting will be co-sponsored by the Australasian Society for Stem Cell Research (ASSCR) and is expected to draw approximately 3,000 stem cell researchers and professionals from around the globe.

“The Australians, led by the ASSCR, submitted a strong proposal, uniting local government, industry and the scientific and health communities to paint a picture of the vibrant professional and cultural opportunities the city has to offer,” ISSCR CEO Nancy Witty said. “We were impressed by their unity, enthusiasm and the comprehensive nature of their proposal.”

“Further, Australia has a long history of pioneering and diverse stem cell research and is the home of many ground breaking discoveries and innovative companies. Dr. Paul Simmons, head of research and new product development at Melbourne-based Mesoblast, was the ISSCR’s president in 2006-2007,” Witty said. “The city’s world class scientists are involved in important collaborations all over the globe and are expected to draw participation from their peers in China, Europe, the United States and beyond.”

“The ASSCR is delighted Melbourne has been chosen to host the 2018 ISSCR Annual Meeting,” Dr. Michael O’Connor, president of the ASSCR, said. “This premier international event is the largest meeting of experts in stem cell medicine in the world. It provides an annual forum for doctors, policy makers and patients to interact with scientists and thought leaders at the cutting edge of stem cell research.”

“As a vibrant cosmopolitan city, Melbourne will be a perfect location for hosting over 3,000 delegates expected to attend from 65 countries around the world,” O’Connor said. “This significant decision recognizes the diverse and leading contributions people within the Australasian region are making to help realize the therapeutic potential of stem cells. We’re excited to co-sponsor this influential event, and by doing so, further contribute to the development of stem cell technologies for patients, the community and our economy.”

The meeting will take place 20-23 June, 2018 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, located on the banks of the Yarra River and surrounded by bustling restaurants, bars, shops and attractions.

Melbourne is known for being easy to navigate, for its temperate climate and for its eclectic culture. The city is home to monumental and historic architecture, an abundance of open green spaces, a wealth of attractions and a sophisticated food and wine scene.
