California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative

Most medical experts view stem cell research as the new frontier in medicine; however, currently at the federal level there is a significant gap in funding for some types of stem cell research. This sparked the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative, supported by a broad-based coalition of Nobel Laureate scientists, medical experts, families, and patient advocacy and disease groups.

With 1.1 million signatures, nearly double the number required for certification, The California Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative officially qualified for placement on the Nov. 2, 2004, general election ballot (proposition 71).

The initiative will authorize low-interest, tax free bonds that will provide, on average, $295 million per year over 10 years to fund research by scientists at universities and advanced medical research facilities in California.

The funds will be allocated under the direction of a new, cutting-edge California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), which will fund all aspects of stem cell therapy development, from basic research through clinical trials to the actual delivery of therapies to patients.
