The ISSCR is saddened to recognize the death of stem cell research pioneer Dr. John Gearhart, a passionate advocate for stem cell research and founding member of the ISSCR Board of Directors. He is perhaps best known for leading the Johns Hopkins University research team that first identified and isolated human pluripotent stem cells from primordial germ cells. Dr. Gearhart was the James W. Effron University Professor, Department: Cell and Developmental Biology, at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and in 2008 was named the first director of Penn's Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IRM).
