The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) is excited to congratulate two exceptional scientists in our community for being awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their groundbreaking collaboration to discover how to alter DNA. This discovery by Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier has revolutionized biomedical research, leading to new ways to treat, or one day cure, devastating hereditary diseases.
“CRISPR-Cas9, the genetic engineering technology developed by these fantastic scientists, is a game-changer in biomedical research and therapy,” said Christine Mummery, ISSCR president. “Female scientists all over the world are exceptionally proud that for the first time in history two women in the same year have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Their incredible contributions to biomedical research and therapy will have broad implications for millions of people worldwide living with one or more genetic disease.”
CRISPR-Cas9 enables scientists to change or remove genes quickly, with a precision only dreamed of just a few years ago. Labs worldwide have re-directed the course of their research programs to incorporate this new tool, creating a CRISPR revolution with huge implications across biology and medicine.
Jennifer Doudna, University of California, Berkeley, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), and Gladstone Institutes, USA, has been a frequent speaker at ISSCR annual meetings including most recently during ISSCR 2020 Virtual and as a keynote speaker at the 2018 Annual Meeting in Melbourne. She is a long-time member of the ISSCR community. Emmanuelle Charpentier, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin, Germany, has presented at the 2017 ISSCR Annual Meeting and regularly speaks and chairs the ISSCR Nucleus Forum held annually in connection with J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference. “The ISSCR is thrilled to see this prestigious recognition of such inspiring members of the stem cell and regenerative medicine community,” Mummery said.
