The ISSCR Announces Kyoto, Japan as Host City for 2029 Annual Meeting

Global stem cell research community to gather 26-29 June 2029 with support from CiRA, Kyoto University, and the Japanese Society for Regenerative Medicine

The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) is pleased to announce that its 2029 Annual Meeting will take place 26-29 June 2029 in Kyoto, Japan. The meeting will be held with the support of the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), Kyoto University, and the Japanese Society for Regenerative Medicine (JSRM), bringing the world’s leading stem cell scientists, clinicians, industry innovators, and other stakeholders together in one of the most influential centers for stem cell research and regenerative medicine.

The ISSCR Annual Meeting is the premier global gathering for stem cell science showcasing discoveries across the breadth of the field, from fundamental biology and emerging technologies to disease modeling and clinical translation. The 2029 meeting will provide an exceptional opportunity to highlight Japan’s scientific leadership while fostering international collaboration and accelerating progress across the field.

“We are thrilled to bring the ISSCR Annual Meeting to Kyoto in 2029 and deeply grateful for the enthusiastic support of CiRA, Kyoto University, JSRM, and the Japanese stem cell research community,” said Malin Parmar, Ph.D., Lund University Sweden, who will preside over the meeting as ISSCR President.  “Japan has played an extraordinary role in advancing stem cell science and its translation to medicine, making Kyoto a particularly meaningful destination for our global community. We look forward to working with our Japanese colleagues to deliver an outstanding scientific meeting that celebrates discovery, strengthens international connections, and advances the future of regenerative medicine.”

“On behalf of the Japanese Society for Regenerative Medicine (JSRM), I am deeply honored to support the ISSCR 2029 Annual Meeting in Kyoto with CiRA,” said Kohji Nishida, M.D., president of JSRM. “This will be the second ISSCR Annual Meeting held in Japan, following the landmark 2012 meeting in Yokohama supported by Professor Shinya Yamanaka’s leadership. We hope this gathering will further strengthen Japan’s vibrant stem cell research and regenerative medicine efforts, particularly by accelerating the clinical translation of iPS cell research. I firmly believe that creativity grows through personal interaction, and I hope the connections made in Kyoto will inspire young scientists to pursue breakthrough discoveries. Together, we look forward to advancing stem cell science and regenerative medicine worldwide for the benefit of patients. I wholeheartedly wish the meeting every success.”

“I believe Kyoto has a unique spiritual energy, and I am truly delighted to welcome the world’s leading stem cell scientists, clinicians, industry innovators, and other stakeholders to this remarkable city,” said Jun Takahashi, M.D., Ph.D., CiRA, Kyoto University, Japan. “I am confident that the ISSCR Annual Meeting 2029 in Kyoto will leave you feeling refreshed, inspired, and energized.”

“On behalf of the ISSCR, I want to thank Dr. Takahashi and Dr. Nishida for their leadership, support, and warm welcome as we bring the ISSCR Annual Meeting back to Japan in 2029, said Keith Alm, ISSCR CEO. “This week in Kyoto, the ISSCR, CiRA, and JSRM came together to celebrate the origins and future of our field. We are grateful for our continued partnership as we build that future together."

Additional information about this ISSCR Annual Meeting, including the scientific program, registration, and opportunities to participate, will be announced as planning progresses.
