ISSCR 2022: Celebrating 20 Years of Stem Cell Excellence
The global stem cell community were able to return to an in-person event for a week of standout science, discovery, and networking at the ISSCR 2022 Annual Meeting. With nearly 2,200 members joining us in San Francisco and over 1,000 participating virtually, we were able to effectively connect and share our wide array of thoughts, research, and perspectives through this hybrid event.
Through 35+ talks and 950+ posters, presenters revealed breakthroughs in stem cell science and applications to human health. Whether you joined live or in-person for one of our 7 Plenary Sessions highlighting award winners and standout science in the field or joined one of our Special Sessions or Workshops, your input and participation helped make the meeting a success.
Following ISSCR 2021, we continued providing sessions across five themes – New Technologies, Tissue Stem Cells and Regeneration, Cellular Identity, Clinical Applications, and Modeling Development and Disease. Poster presentations were available both in-person and online this year. San Francisco attendees got to see the posters in the Poster & Exhibit Hall at the end of each day. Virtual attendees could view the posters in our virtual Poster Theater, which offered presenters the opportunity to share mini presentations and take attendees through their discoveries face-to-face in their own dedicated Poster Session video chat room.
For this year's meeting, we provided a plethora of Special Sessions that focused on a plethora of particularized topics. From a symposium on aging and regenerative medicine that was available to experience for the general public to a workshop that focused on diversity and equity in STEM, a theme for ISSCR 2022 was accessibility and inclusion. Other Special Sessions focused on science advocacy, quality standards, and networking for career development.
The annual meeting also provided many opportunities for attendees to learn about the latest tools and how they can be applied to further discovery. Meeting attendees had the opportunity to meet with exhibitors and sponsors, attend Focus Sessions, see new science at our Innovation Showcases, and get brief 30-minute presentations at our brand-new Micro Theater.
In addition, before ISSCR 2022, we hosted the Workshop on Clinical Translations in advance of the annual meeting. This year's workshop focused on advancing hematopoietic cell therapies, using CRISPR screenings, genomic analysis, and synthetic biology to improve cellular therapies, and how to unleash cells from immune rejection to improve off the shelf therapies.
A major theme of the meeting was to celebrate the achievements of our community. Our 20th Anniversary Celebration highlighted the strides we've made over the last two decades and also provided music, food, and drinks to celebrate all of the work our entire community has done. The meeting also recognized members who achieved ISSCR awards and gave lectures:
- Jennifer E. Phillips-Cremins – ISSCR Dr. Susan Lim Award for Outstanding Young Investigator
- Lorenz Studer – ISSCR Achievement Award
- Joanna Wysocka – ISSCR Momentum Award
- Sean J. Morrison – ISSCR Public Service Award
- Masayo Takahashi -John McNeish Memorial Lecture
- Ruth Lehmann – Anne McLaren Lecture
- Deepak Srivastava – Ernest McCulloch Lecture
Thank you to all the members, leaders, and teams who have made our return to in-person (as well as continuing our virtual platform) a huge success!
We look forward to seeing you next year in Boston, USA for ISSCR 2023!
